Cyber Deterrence and Resilience is a practical cyber resilience training course that equips learners with the strategic and technical skills to deter attackers, withstand modern cyber threats, and recover quickly from security incidents.

Designed for cybersecurity professionals, IT administrators, SOC analysts, and risk managers, this intermediate-level course explains what cyber deterrence and cyber resilience are, then demonstrates how cyber security deterrence, cyber security resilience, incident response, and continuity planning work together to strengthen organizational security.

Through real-world case studies, hands-on labs, and industry frameworks such as NIST CSF and ISO standards, learners explore cyber defense strategies, resilience engineering, cyber deception techniques, and recovery planning for critical infrastructure and enterprise systems.

The course also introduces defense-in-depth, threat intelligence, honeypots, business continuity and business resilience planning, and further reflects upon how to measure cyber resilience in modern digital environments.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design and evaluate a cyber deterrence strategy, implement cyber resilience frameworks, develop incident recovery plans, and apply proactive, defensive cybersecurity practices that reduce cyber risk and improve organizational readiness against evolving cyber threats.

What is cyber resilience?

Cyber resilience is an organization's ability to anticipate, withstand, recover from, and adapt to cyber attacks while continuing to deliver critical operations.

Unlike cyber security, which focuses on preventing breaches, cyber security resilience assumes some attacks will succeed and prioritizes continuity and recovery. This course covers the distinction directly in Module 2.

What is cyber deterrence?

Cyber deterrence is the practice of discouraging attacks by making them too costly, too difficult, or too unlikely to succeed.

Deterrence in cyber security works through three approaches: denial (hardening targets), punishment (imposing consequences), and resilience (proving attacks will not achieve their aim).Module 1 covers all three, along with attribution challenges and the limits of deterrence.

What is the difference between cyber deterrence and cyber resilience?

Cyber deterrence aims to stop attacks before they happen by raising the attacker's cost and lowering their chance of success.Cyber resilience assumes some attacks will get through and focuses on withstanding and recovering from them.

The two are complementary, and this course treats deterrence by resilience as a strategy in its own right.

What is cyber resilience training?

A cyber resilience training course teaches practitioners to build systems and processes that survive cyber attacks rather than only preventing them.

Coverage typically spans cyber resilience frameworks such as NIST CSF, ISO 27001, and ISO 22301, incident response, business resilience and continuity planning, disaster recovery, and cyber resilience measurement.

Why is cyber resilience important?

Prevention alone fails eventually.Cyber resilience protects revenue, customer trust, and regulatory standing by ensuring critical operations continue during an incident and restart quickly after one.

For critical infrastructure and enterprise systems, downtime often costs more than the breach itself, which is why cyber security resilience has become a board-level concern rather than a purely technical one.

How to become cyber resilient?

Organizations improve cyber resilience by adopting a recognized framework, identifying critical systems and dependencies, layering defensive controls, and building tested recovery capability.

Practical steps include mapping assets against NIST CSF, designing a BCP/DRP, exercising those plans regularly, applying Zero Trust principles, and tracking resilience metrics over time.Resilience is a maintained capability, not a one-time project.

Which cyber security course is best for me?

The right course depends on your starting point.Entry-level learners generally need foundational cyber security training courses covering networks, threats, and controls first.

Cyber Deterrence and Resilience is an intermediate course built for cybersecurity professionals, IT administrators, SOC analysts, and risk managers who already understand cyber threats and now need strategy, frameworks, and recovery planning.

How do companies improve cyber resilience?

Companies improve cyber resilience by running a gap analysis against a framework such as NIST CSF, layering endpoint, network, and policy controls, building and testing a BCP/DRP, adopting Zero Trust architecture, and using automation to shorten recovery.

This course includes a hands-on NIST resilience gap analysis and an incident response and recovery exercise.

How do you measure cyber resilience?

How to measure cyber resilience comes down to recovery and detection metrics rather than control counts.

Common measures include recovery time and recovery point objectives, mean time to detect and respond, percentage of recovery plans tested in the last cycle, and framework maturity scores.Module 2 closes on measuring and improving resilience.

Which frameworks does this course cover?

The course works with NIST CSF, ISO 27001, ISO 22301, ENISA and other regional approaches, and the NIST incident handling guidance. Learners apply these rather than only reading about them, including a NIST-based gap analysis exercise.

Does the course include hands-on practice?

Yes.

The course includes four peer-reviewed hands-on exercises - adversary profiling and deterrence mapping, a NIST resilience gap analysis, deception operations using Cowrie honeypots, and an incident response and recovery sprint plus a 60-minute capstone mini-challenge and two real-world case studies.

How long does the course take?

Roughly nine hours across four modules, on a flexible self-paced schedule. Each module runs about two hours except the final module, which runs three. Assessment is four graded assignments plus peer-reviewed practical work.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Completing the course earns a shareable certificate that can be added to a LinkedIn profile. It is included with Coursera Plus, and financial aid is available for eligible learners.

Who should take this cyber resilience course?

This intermediate-level course is designed for cybersecurity professionals, IT administrators, SOC analysts, and risk managers.

It suits practitioners who already understand cyber threats and defensive controls but now need the strategic layer above them: cyber deterrence strategy, cyber resilience frameworks, and recovery planning. No prior experience with deterrence or resilience frameworks is required.

When will I have access to the lectures and assignments?

To access course materials, assignments, and earn a Certificate, you'll need to purchase the Certificate experience when you enroll in a course.Eligible learners may also have the option to start with a Free Trial. Some courses may also offer a Full Course, No Certificate option.

This lets you access course materials, submit required assessments, and receive a final grade, but you won't be able to earn or purchase a Certificate.

What will I get if I purchase the Certificate?

When you purchase a Certificate you get access to all course materials, including graded assignments.Upon completing the course, your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. In select learning programs, you can apply for financial aid or a scholarship if you can’t afford the enrollment fee. If fin aid or scholarship is available for your learning program selection, you’ll find a link to apply on the description page.
